Meet the feathered version of Chucky. This chick’s big eyes look like buttons or black pebbles, and they’re definitely more than a little unnerving, as is its oversized beak. Perhaps this bird’s demonic eyes simply live up to its name: the Ghost Bird or the Great Potoo. They’re commonly found in South America and have a blood-curdling scream. These insect-eating nocturnal birds look a little like owls, but they’re definitely not related.

Spotted in 2021 by a woman in Chibolo, Colombia, this rare bird is one we’d much rather avoid after dark! Maybe we’re being over-sensitive, but its menacing smile is enough to put us off birdwatching!
